Nikko

Amidst the sacred mountain ranges north of Tokyo lies Nikko, a small city that punches far above its weight with some of Japan’s most extravagant (and expensive) temples & shrines. The flagship attraction, Nikkō Tōshogū, is an invaluable site of significance for the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled the country for 250 years. With the remains of the Shogunate’s founder resting here since 1617, it’s hardly a surprise that it cost over 300 million dollars in today’s currency to construct.
